CHAPTERĀ 37
Ā
āI almost didnāt recognize you, Professor!ā the woman gushed in accented English as she approached Langdon. āItās your clothing.ā She smiled warmly and gave Langdonās Brioni suit an appreciative nod. āVery fashionable. You look almost Italian.ā
Langdonās mouth went bone dry, but he managed a polite smile as the woman joined him. āGood … morning,ā he stumbled. āHow are you?ā
She laughed, holding her belly. āExhausted. Little Catalina kicked all night.ā The woman glanced around the room, looking puzzled. āIl Duomino didnāt mention you were coming back today. I assume heās with you?ā
Il Duomino? Langdon had no idea who she was talking about.
The woman apparently saw his confusion and gave a reassuring chuckle. āItās okay, everybody in Florence calls him by that nickname. He doesnāt mind.ā She glanced around. āDid he let you in?ā
āHe did,ā Sienna said, arriving from across the hall, ābut he had a breakfast meeting. He said you wouldnāt mind if we stayed to look around.ā Sienna enthusiastically extended her hand. āIām Sienna. Robertās sister.ā
The woman gave Siennaās hand an overly official handshake. āIām Marta Alvarez. Arenāt you the lucky oneāhaving Professor Langdon as a private guide.ā
āYes,ā Sienna enthused, barely hiding the roll of her eyes. āHeās so smart!ā
There was an awkward pause as the woman studied Sienna. āFunny,ā she said, āI donāt see any family resemblance at all. Except perhaps your height.ā
Langdon sensed an impending train wreck. Now or never.
āMarta,ā Langdon interrupted, hoping he had heard her name correctly, āIām sorry to trouble you, but, well . I guess you can probably imagine why Iām here.ā
āActually, no,ā she replied, her eyes narrowing. āI canāt for the life of me imagine what you would be doing here.ā
Langdonās pulse quickened, and in the awkward silence that followed, he realized his gamble was about to crash and burn. Suddenly Marta broke into a broad smile and laughed out loud.
āProfessor, Iām joking! Of course, I can guess why you returned. Frankly, I donāt know why you find it so fascinating, but since you and il Duomino spent almost an hour up there last night, Iām guessing youāve come back to show your sister?ā
āRight …ā he managed. āExactly. Iād love to show Sienna, if thatās not …an inconvenience?ā
Marta glanced up to the second-floor balcony and shrugged. āNo problem. Iām headed up there now.ā
Langdonās heart pounded as he looked up to the second-story balcony at the rear of the hall. I was up there last night? He remembered nothing. The balcony, he knew, in addition to being at the exact same height as the words cerca trova, also served as the entrance to the palazzoās museum, which Langdon visited whenever he was here.
Marta was about to lead them across the hall, when she paused, as if having second thoughts. āActually, Professor, are you sure we canāt find something a bit less grim to show your lovely sister?ā
Langdon had no idea how to respond.
āWeāre seeing something grim?ā Sienna asked. āWhat is it? He hasnāt told me.ā
Marta gave a coy smile and glanced at Langdon. āProfessor, would you like me to tell your sister about it, or would you prefer to do so yourself?ā
Langdon nearly jumped at the opportunity. āBy all means, Marta, why donāt you tell her all about it.ā
Marta turned back to Sienna, speaking very slowly now. āI donāt know what your brother has told you, but weāre going up to the museum to see a very unusual mask.ā
Siennaās eyes widened a bit. āWhat kind of mask? One of those ugly plague masks they wear at Carnevale?ā
āGood guess,ā Marta said, ābut no, itās not a plague mask. Itās a much different kind of mask. Itās called a death mask.ā
Langdonās gasp of revelation was audible, and Marta scowled at him, apparently thinking he was being overly dramatic in an attempt to frighten his sister.
āDonāt listen to your brother,ā she said. āDeath masks were a very common practice in the 1500s. Itās essentially just a plaster cast of someoneās face, taken a few moments after that person dies.ā
The death mask. Langdon felt the first moment of clarity heād felt since waking up in Florence. Dante’s Inferno … cerca trova … Looking through the eyes of death. The mask!
Sienna asked, āWhose face was used to cast the mask?ā
Langdon put his hand on Siennaās shoulder and answered as calmly as possible. āA famous Italian poet. His name was Dante Alighieri.ā
